Marriage and the Mercy of God – I love that theme for a conference. Not because it is a catchy title but because of the simplicity of the message behind it. For me the significance of this conference was that it clarified for me a perspective on my marriage that I never fully grasped before. In order for my love for Cynthia to be truly biblical, it must be proceeded by the kind of mercy that I have received from God. He has not treated me as my sins deserve … ever. Instead, He freely gives me what I do not deserve – forgiveness.
Paul Tripp defines mercy as
. . . kind, sympathetic and forgiving treatment of others that works to relieve their distress and cancel their debts.
Jesus has treated me this way. Amazing! This kind of grace calls me to want to treat others the same way beginning with my wife. Every message was superb as it reinforced the theme of mercy. Instead of leaving the conference overwhelmed or condemned, I left hopeful and encouraged.
